Cortical correlate of pattern backward masking ( inferior temporal cortex / temporal integration / shape recognition )

چکیده
The perception of a briefly presented shape is strongly impaired when it is followed by another pattern, a phenomenon called backward masking. We found that the vast majority of a sample of shape-selective neurons in the macaque inferior temporal cortex respond selectively to backward-masked shapes, although these shapes could not be discriminated by human and monkey subjects. However, this selective response was brief, since it was either interrupted by the mask or overridden by a response to the mask itself We show that reliable discrimination of briefly presented shapes by single neurons depends on the temporal integration of the response. Presentation of the mask, however, reduces the number of spikes available for integration, explaining backward masking. These results also provide direct neurophysiological evidence for the "interruption theory" of backward

Temporal and cerebellar brain regions that support both declarative memory formation and retrieval.
Using event-related fMRI, we scanned young healthy subjects while they memorized real-world photographs and subsequently tried to recognize them within a series of new photographs. We confirmed that activity in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and inferior prefrontal cortex correlates with declarative memory formation as defined by the subsequent memory effect, stronger responses to subsequently ...

Purpose: In this study, the main goal was to determine the correlation between the thickness of cerebral cortex and the severity of cognitive disorder in Alzheimer's disease Materials and method: Twenty patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease with mean age of 72.95 year(14 women and 6 men) and Ten Cognitively normal (CN) subjects with mean age of 70.50 year( 7 women and 3 men) were include...
متن کاملEffects of perceptual learning in visual backward masking on the responses of macaque inferior temporal neurons.
Learning is critical for fast and efficient object recognition in primates. To understand the neuronal correlates of behavioral improvements due to training, we recorded the responses of single neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex of monkeys that were trained to recognize briefly presented, backward-masked objects. First we investigated training effects that are specific to the objects ...

Introduction: In this study, we intend to determine the correlation between the thickness of the cerebral cortex and the severity of the cognitive disorder in Alzheimer disease (AD). Methods: A total of 20 (14 women and 6 men) patients diagnosed with AD with a Mean age of 72.95 years, and 10 (7 women and 3 men) cognitively normal (CN) subjects with a Mean age of 70.50 years were included in th...
متن کاملPhoneme Classification Using Temporal Tracking of Speech Clusters in Spectro-temporal Domain
This article presents a new feature extraction technique based on the temporal tracking of clusters in spectro-temporal features space. In the proposed method, auditory cortical outputs were clustered. The attributes of speech clusters were extracted as secondary features. However, the shape and position of speech clusters change during the time. The clusters temporally tracked and temporal tra...
